volunteer project and a new course

Next to the information design project I’m doing a volunteer project in Västerås. I got in this project a couple a weeks ago because Hubert, one of the organizers of the International Committee, needed an designer. In this project we are giving information about the exchange student to the average Swede, because the school (and the municipal of this area) thinks that there is almost no awareness about exchange students. The budget is surprisingly big, so we can spend a lot of money on production and promotion. We decided to put big posters in common area’s. The posters tell the experiences of exchange students here in Sweden and their home country. We try to familiarize the persons with the visitor.

Below some pictures about the first mockup we printed at the print shop to give an idea.

For this project I’m doing the graphic design, thats quite a responsibility, because at the moment I’m the only one with the proper skills. I’m trying to find some help, because I think this is to much work (we are going to make more then 10 of these!). Well the overload of work gives me the next problem. For now it’s kind of easy going, but it going to be hell the next 5 weeks.

Remembered the Lighting course? We’ll that kind of sucked. It started sucking more when I got to know that I only get 2 ECTS instead of 7,5. The story is to long to tell every detail, but it narrows down that the solution for participating this course was half-assed. O yeah, and the teacher kind of screwed me over (don’t tell a Swedish teacher that his / her course sucks, in a proper way of course). But of course, this is also a bit my fault by not participating the final presentation because I was doing party-party in Stockholm. But it is a bit of chicken-and-egg story. I’m tired of talking to coordinators and the teacher to find a solution this way. I will try to get my two points for the honor, so I have to write a report to finish it.

To get all my points in the end, I’m going to follow another course. I’m going to do a graphic design course, with the program InDesign, for a real company. It’s a long time ago when I used InDesign, so a good opportunity to brush up my skills. The course is from the same teacher as the information design project. Also, I’m not the only exchange student, so this sounds kinda promising.

I have so much more to tell, but It’s getting late already and I have to get up early. I will try to make a new post before the end of the week.

party’s, studying and party’s

Ah, finally at my desk to post something on my blog. It was a very busy week, and I had absolutely no time to write something. The first week was of course the introduction week, and everyday were activities. Its was kind of strange, because everything was in Vasteras, but I study in a different city. So I met a lot of nice people which I will see not so much anymore, i think. Well on the other side, there are some activities for exchange students, and maybe I will attend to some of them. The first one is a trip to Stockholm, but we’re planning with a couple of people to go to the north of Sweden (quite an investment, by the way). But I will write more of this if I know more.

And Dutch people are friggin’ everywhere, in Vasteras are about 10 Dutch students, 8 from the medical school in Maastricht and 2 from Groningen. So if there’s a party in Vasteras I don’t wanna miss, I just tag along with them.

I’ve also been in Eskilstuna at typical Swedish student party’s, located at student corridors because going out is way to expensive. 5 euros for a beer is just ridiculous, so I understand why. The party’s contains of a lot of cheap beer (which you have to bring yourself) and native rock music. So it’s a bit strange to be the only foreign student at this kind of party’s, but if you’ll approach people you will have a good time. I think I met some fun people to hang around with. Also, partying starts at 6 (but most people will come at 8 ) and lasts ‘till 2 o’ clock. Different then in the Netherlands, my friends and I mostly start to meet at 11.

But anyways, a lot has happened this week, its way to much to describe. I’ve arranged almost everything for my school, my room and internet. The 3d animation teacher is a great guy, the lessons are useful, but there’s a lot of homework (which I didn’t had time for, yet). I also met a few people back from Istanbul, it was really great to see them again. Next week I probably go to a dinnerparty of someone I didn’t see yet.

As most of you know, Lode is also in Eskilstuna, and has his own blog. I think lode has a good vision on the Swedish habits and culture. So if you want to know more about Sweden and its people, go here.

Furthermore, I had alot of spam, so installed a bunch of spam filters. I hope it won’t come back, otherwise i have to lock the comments.

Saturdays

Hmmm, going to the student reception in Vasteras wasn’t very fruitful. We talked about things I didn’t already new and the only thing we got was some basic information. Luckily we went to the IKEA to look for some furniture for Lode and I bought some kitchen stuff. In the evening we went to look for lodes place, which is located in a flat and a 10 minute walk from the center. It was a long day too, and it’s 11 o ‘clock already. I’m too tired to do anything tonight.
